PROJECT REVEAL: Home Office and Lounge

We have been designing home offices for years. Most clients who requested a home office did not spend much time in offices, but rather traveled during the week, attending meetings and joining outings, and all they wanted coming home was a place to recharge, get organized, and set up a plan for the week ahead.

Multipurpose Space

Pandemic forced many people to work from home, rely on technology, and carve out a private space in their homes for work. During that time, clients' Wishlist changed from wanting formal dining rooms to wanting a home office. As new homes were built, home offices were integrated into the layouts from the outset, and more casual layouts focused on comfort became essential. While there is now a balance between working from home and in an office, having a space away from the daily grind is still very important.

Functionality & Flexibility

The second level primary suite of our client's home was converted into a work/home flow concept. For this family with young children, the space needed to be functional and flexible so that each level of the home could be used in different ways during different growth stages. To do so, we focused on the selection of furniture pieces that could be moved around and multiple decorative lighting styles to fit the use of the space through the day and evening: taking notes and typing on the desk area; reading a book in the lounge or playing with the children on the floor.

Building Layers

The overall feel of the room/s coordinated with the rest of the home color paint: Farrow and Ball Strong White and Benjamin Moore Boothbay Gray. The intentional mixing of white oak DWR desk, ergonomic desk chair, coordinating ceiling pendants and walnut wood tones of Verellen coffee table and bookcase translate into a collected room rather that a brand new solution.

The Lounge was designed around 2 key elements, the fireplace and the Heather sofa by George Smith previously purchased by the client. This sofa was updated with new cushion covers and the making of new back cushions matching original Mohair fabric in French Blue color with a micro cord by Samuel & Sons. To contrast the blue color we have layered some accent pillows custom made with Zak & Fox textile. Lastly, the choice of area rugs, which was based on comfort and durability, as well as pairing the jute area rug with the beautifully crafted Armadillo area rug.

In order to accommodate the ever changing needs of growing children, we often source products that can be easily updated and moved from one room to another. Vintage items are also a great way to bring a layered aesthetic that is just as meaningful as the objects they are paired with. PHOTO CREDIT: Federica Ghidelli
